Group One Glen – Breaking the Taboo of Mental Health.

By Hilly –

Ladbrokes recently produced a short interview with Champion jockey, Glen Boss. Boss who is one win away from holding the whip, cricket style, riding 100 Group1 Winners. In the interview Boss briefly talks about the low times in his career and how he was close to taking his life and ending it all. It is a timely reminder and a chance to talk about this taboo topic which doesn’t discriminate and is becoming increasingly spoken about more in the mainstream media especially, which can only be a positive thing.

I’m sure we have all had highs and lows in life, then there are the ones we have as punters. The punt is based on success and when we have those days, where a jockey has butchered your mount, the gaps didn’t open in the home straight or the jockey fell off mid run. You have done your dough and then darkness begins to envelope you. We hate the world , the punt, the missus and kids at home . However, as the saying the goes the show must go on, no matter how low you are feeling, you cant let the Punt control your emotions, you must control your emotions and if you cant, don’t bet, its as simple as that.

Remember there is always a way out and if you think you are at that stage there is help out there. But first it is up to you to make that first step and reach out, and talk. It is nothing to be afraid of or ashamed of. Unbeknown to you the person next to you at the TAB, your work mate or your best mate may be going through the same thing. It sounds cliche but its true: Its not weak to speak!
