GOLF: Wyndham Championship

By Nic Rees –

The PGA regular season enters its final round this weekend at the Wyndham Championship.

The Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina plays host to the event, giving the tour pros that have qualified their last chance to hone their skills and find some form heading into the playoffs next week. The course itself looks to be in pristine condition, Players will need to navigate small undulating greens and narrow rolling fairways. Iron play and Greens in regulation will be at a premium this week.

Looking at the field, With the playoffs just around the corner, some of the bigger names that YTP readers are familiar with are resting up and preparing themselves for the what’s to come.

This leaves the door wide open for 2019 runner up and 2011 winner of this very event Webb Simpson. Simpson, fresh from a T15 place at the St Jude Invitational last week, boasts a scoring average at this event of 65.31 and if that’s not enough to convince you in the last four editions of the Wyndham he’s only been beaten by six golfers. The small greens are going to play a big part this week, Simpson currently hits a touch over 68% Greens in Regulation and currently sits just outside the top 30 in putts per round at 28.55. If he can build off the momentum he built at St Jude, Simpson could move up the standings in both the FedEx and Ryder Cups and head into the playoffs with Tour win number 8 under his belt.

There’s also a list of golfers trying to fight their way into the playoffs next week. Most notably current world no. 29 Will Zalatoris. Despite an amazing season, Will doesn’t have full status on the PGA tour, and with the current systems set up he will need to WIN this event to earn his tour card and feature in the playoffs. The others who will need a big result this weekend to claim a top 125 spot are Aussie Adam Scott (currently safe at 121 but will need a showing to stay there), Justin Rose (138), Tommy Fleetwood (136)and one of my personal favourite Rickie Fowler (130) who has been in every FedEx playoff since 2010 and finished in the top 10 of 3 of those.
