Having seen a fair few ads popping up lately promoting the buying of micro shares in horse ownership. With this being promoted as a cheap alternative to becoming involved in horse ownership, I thought I’d give my opinion. 

I believe before diving into any type of horse  ownership do your research. There is many options out there and one that will suit you better.  If you ask me, the selling of micro shares is just a marketing ploy and money raising exercise.

A recent advertisement I saw was trying to sell one thousand micro shares in 10% of a horse. With all micro shares sold the 10% value was near doubled. Add the $54 per micro share management fee for the syndicator. You do the math. What a joke I say.

Then your share of prizemoney at 0.01% is literally a pittance and wouldn’t come close to even covering your initial outlay!

 You can probably now gather I’m not a fan. I believe firstly come up with a budget, even gets some mates involved to lower the cost. There is more value in researching a trainer seeing what shares they have available, whether in buying a share usually 5% to 10% or more if you can afford it.

They may even have lease options which are good as there is no upfront cost. One of the best things being a horse owner is the race day experience. Being an owner is free entry to the members for the day. This is usually capped at 20 owners.

The same goes for owners names in the racebook. Make what is right for you, horse ownership can be alot of fun.  Don’t go throwing you hard earned down the drain with no reward.

The weekend saw us have one runner from the blackbook and it was the third start we were on Top Order.  We were quiet keen with him dropping back from a bm90 to a bm72. He didn’t start the best dropping back 2 lengths from the field. 

After catching up with the field and settling 3^rd last, he found himself tailing off the field into straight and looked unlikely. Sticking to the rail he show his usual acceleration and quickly past the field with heart in mouth finish with a challenger down the outside. But he managed to hold on for the win!

3. JAMAEA (4th of 8)

Settled 3^rd last in the fence and had a lovely run in transit. When straightening Berry had a lap full of horse under him and riding with confidence. Started to make her run at the 250m with few horses in front, when the horse on her inside broke down and stop momentum for a stride. When got going again was too late, but hit the line saying, look at me.

7. KEIAI NAUTIQUE (4th of 14)

Wow! This lightly raced 7 year old ex Japanese Galloper was having his first start in Australia in a Group 1 did not disappoint his supporters.

Settling 3^rd last a few off the fence and came wide on the turn. He showed had brilliant turn of foot down the outside and a horse outside of him being a hindrance.

Hit the line for a nice debut for 4^th. Hope he is double figures next start.

Group 3 – 3yo + Fillies & Mares – 1100m

8. WRITTEN BEAUTY (5th of 16)

Settled 4^th last on the fence and found herself midfield in the straight and could not get out. Had to go back inside and with a wall of horses infront of her. Had to dodge and weave to find a gap and hit the line hard between horses. Big run considering circumstances.

The penultimate round of the season is upon us! The BMW championship kicks off tonight (AUS time) at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore and after last week’s Northern Trust’s finish we are pumped for more quality golf.

The top 75 are left standing in this no cut event so we expect to see the cream rise to the top come Sunday. This time of year, with so many players vying for valuable FedEx points and Ryder cup positions we can expect some epic battles out there.

I’ve analysed the field and the course and have found a bit of value for us punters out there. With so much quality it will be tight at the top and I expect another playoff once it’s all said and done. 

The big dogs who can smash the ball long are going to love that the 9’s have been flipped over. In the first 5 holes we will see two driveable par fours and 2 par fives… WOW.

This could be fantastic for the likes of Rory, DJ and of course the mad scientist Bryson. If they can get the radars working off the tee it’s going to set them up for a great day early on. 

Having such a small amount of time between events is means those in form are also going to feature.

Our man Cam Smith was one wonky tee shot away from really challenging last week’s winner Tony Finau in the first playoff hole at the Northern Trust last week.

I’m looking forward to seeing Smithy continue his hot run of form lately and expect him to be up there at the top on Sunday.

John Rham capitulated with two holes to play last week and I don’t expect him to falter again. 

All in all it’s going to be a monster few days. For us Aussies we’ll have to stay up late to watch the action but it gives us an excuse to get some mates over and maybe have a beverage or two. 

Outright Winner – Very tough to pick. The field is quality but think Rory McIlroy is going to make the most of a hot start and take it out he’s currently sitting at $23. Our boy Cam Smith is also at $23

Best Bets – Cam Smith top 10 at $3.10

Value Bet – (Sportsbet) – Any 2 of Cam Smith, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Speith to finish top 5 at $9.50
